#143 Birds

Birds in the Upper Canada Village farm.

Upper Canada Village

Our end-of-the-year field trip today was Upper Canada Village. (Which happens to be about 2 hours away.) It's a re-make of what a small town would be like in the 1800's. You can go in the shops and houses where there are actors explaining life in a certain building. For example, the dressmaker yelled at the girls wearing "trousers." Are soccer shorts trousers? Apparently they are!

For those who don't know, back in the 1800's, Canada was ruled by the Brittish. They split the country into two parts. (Ontario and Quebec were the most important parts) Lower Canada was most of (up North). And Upper Canada was much smaller. It consisted of North/Eastern Ontario and Southern Quebec. Everyone important lived in Upper Canada because that was where most trade happened and the country was governed. Trades would happen via the "Fleuve St. Laurent" which was divided between Upper and Lower Canada.

(I basically just translated a history lesson from French to English for you!)

#94 Cafe

This was the only building (other than the bathrooms) that was actually modern. It was actually like a real cafeteria!

#42 Fences

White fence outside a yellow house

#226 Direction

They had a lot of sign posts with "street names" on them.

#190 Farm Yard

(after taking this one I was very dissapointed to hear there was no "lazy" theme)
These pigs didn't even move the whole time we were there today! There were three of them and they were huge.
Especially compared to their little friends!!!

#142 Shiny

In the Tin Shop they were demonstrating how to make candle snuffers. This wall was sooooo bright!

#218 Games

This old checker board was sitting on a small table in the Tin Shop.

#228 Wool

We went to the Woolen Mill where they were making WOOL! This was a huge room. They gave me a strand of sheep fur as a souvenir. This is a machine used to make the wool.

#172 Black and White

Bad picture, but this was so cool. Just as I was leaving the Woolen Mill, I saw a whole room full of B&W wool!

#150 Photo

This is a sign for an 1800's photography "studio"
Tina and I would have dragged Isabelle in, but it was locked. (darn)

#261 Gold

These buckets were very rusty indeed!
They were used to transfer water from the water pump to the farm.

#9 Newspaper

These are notices supposedly made at the newspaper shop. We saw the newspaper being designed, printed, and the final copy. Of course this was the newwspaper in 1800, so they used the little word stamps to print them.

#364 Zig-Zag

We went to the cheese factory where we watched them make cheese curds. Isabelle nearly puked. (She hates cheese!)

This is the stove pipe leading from the fireplace to the huge box where the cheese circles were being cooked and flipped.

#281 Royal

A street at Upper Canada Village

#202 Soap

This is an awful picture, with a funny story.

We walked into the General Store after visiting the Cheese factory, and this soap was on the table. Cristina, being very outgoing said the following:

Tina: Is that the cheese made in the cheese factory over there.
Shopkeeper/actress: Well, if it was, you'd get very sick.
Customer: And a very clean mouth.
Tina: OHH!!! Is it soap?

#155 Calendar

In the General Store, there was a clock on the wall. The "shopkeeper" told us it was a calendar clock. On the top is the time, while the bottom tells you the day.

#29 Challenge

OK, this one was taken a couple weeks ago.
I was out in my backyard with Hamish, throwing his favourite pink tennis ball against the fence so he could chase it. Well, it got stuck in the fence. He just sat there staring at it.

#111 Ball

I went to a ball game last night. It was the New Jersey Jackals against the Ottawa Rapidz. The Rapidz are a new team here. We used to be home to the Lynx, but due to lack of turnout, they had to change cities and bring in a team from a lower level. But they are very good as far as I can tell!

#183 Uniform

It was little league night at the baseball game last night, so a bunch of kids in uniform paraded out onto the field before the game. Some players from the New Jersey Jackals were looking on.

#144 Big

One of the big lights at baseball diamond. (Finally a nice sky while taking a picture!)

#112 Ancient

These are antique skates that hang at my cottage. Apparently, you strap them to your boots. I don't think I'd be going to fast on those things!

#3 Soup

This is an old pot that sits on top of a piece of furniture at our cottage. I don't know if it ever was, but it was supposed to be used to put soup on the table. Now it contains Easter egg colouring supplies.

#238 Comfort

I know this is not a nice picture, but I like the idea of it. For the long weekend, (Victoria day) we brought Hamish to our cottage for the first time. My dad used to bring his dogs there all the time. As soon as Hamish got there, he plopped down on the favourite chair of my dad's old dog's.

#222 Perfect

These are some tests from my school year. A test reading 100% would have been better, but unfortunately, none of my middle school teachers mark like that. It was kind of fun going through my binder because there were things in there from the first term. I'm either really unorganized or super organized because I'm always thinking I'll need papers I don't, so I just keep them! So I use a rather large binder...

#31 Boat

These are some kayaks we have at our cottage. We bought two at first and we loved them so much that we went back and got 2 more. I love how colourful they are!!!

#91 Lonely

This hammock hangs at the cottage. This is pushing the theme a little, because it's more the kind of place you go when you want to be lonely. But it's very nice to just lie there.

#14 Wooden

These are very old-fashioned snow-shoes that hang in my cottage. We use modernized ones now, but these are neat. I use them at an outdoor education center my class goes to in the winter.

#361 Bell

This bell hangs at my cottage for a reason. My grandfather used to take his sons fishing on the lake, and my Grandma would prepare dinner. She would always ring the bell when it was time to come in.

#50 Fruity

This was over the entrance of some Bio store???

#268 Power

The stream moved so quickly, it was hard to take these pictures out of fear of falling in. It was loud and intimidating, but Isabelle couldn't care less. She was climbing all over and jumping around!

#269 Feet

Cristina's feet in a small pond.

#23 Water

Mont Tremblant is mainly a mountain and ski resort, but in my opinion the most beautiful part is also the most unused. Tucked away, there is this stream next to a nature path. There are rocks all around that you can either picnic or climb on. We did both.

I had so many water pictures to choose from but this was my favourite.

-Kate

#113 Iconic

BeaverTails are definitely iconic to Canadians. For those who don't know, a traditional one is a pastry shaped like a beaver's tail. They add sugar and cinnamon on top. But my favourite is the one with Nutella and powdered sugar on it. YUM!

-Kate

#235 Umbrella

Umbrella's outside a shop in Tremblant.
-Kate

#236 Dog

We went to Mont Tremblant on Saturday. They have a lot of shops and we couldn't resist going in this one. The sign is in French but it says underneath the title: For "chic" dogs and mischievous cats. That was basically what it was. They sold items such as fleece lined harnesses and Ferrari shaped dog beds.

-Kate

#86 Telephone

We stopped for candy and a small convenience store and these old-fashioned telephone booths were outside.

#331 Green

These were garage doors on the way to my cottage. There were about 3 and looked as though they belonged to a business. The windows were the same colour. Lime green is my favourite colour, but this is a little too much.

-Kate

#350 Signs

This weekend my friends came up to my cottage with me. We have to cross a ferry to get there. This sign has baffled my family for years and it was such an obvious one for the theme that my mom and I fought over it! The downer in this picture is that the sky was awful! But I couldn't resist posting it. The sign below is in French as this ferry is in Quebec.

If anyone has ideas about the one on the top, please tell me.

-Kate

#192 Sunset

This is a sunset taken on Friday in Ottawa.
-Kate

#36 Clouds

I thought of posting this under silhouette for a while, but I just love the little clouds in the picture.

-Kate

#213 Running

Mungo the Westie running with Hamish after school. His long hair just flies when he runs.

-Kate

#33 Stripey

These are the speed bumps used in my condominium. They are removed during the Winter so that the snow-plows can come through.

By The Way

The past few pictures have been taken using a new camera. I bought myself a canon elph yesterday because my old point-and-shoot is malfunctioning. (You may have noticed)

-Kate

#126 Tool

These are garden tools in my backyard. (and a hockey stick)
-Kate

#161 Sky

The sky was so pretty when I woke up this morning!
-Kate

#299 Poem

This is the Poetry folder we've been working on in English class for the past 2 months. The photo on the folder is my mom's.
-Kate

#337 Fuzzy

A VooDoo doll Giovana made me. Tina thinks they're freaky, but they're quite adorable.

-Kate

#362 Friendship

This is Hamish with his best friend, Mungo the Westie.
They greet me every day after school.
